- Armley Spring Organ Festival
After disturbing news from Hindley, it is good to report better Schulze related news from Armley. Celebrating the completion of Harrison & Harrison's restoration of the famed organ (Schulze 1869 & 1879, and Binns 1905), a series of concerts and events will be held at St. Bartholomew's, Armley. Performers include Graham Barber, Nicolas Kynaston and Gillian Weir, and events run from Friday the 28th to Monday the 31st of May 2004. Concerts are on our events listings, and more details on the organ can be found at www.armley-schulze.freeserve.co.uk.
- Improvising organists in the news
Many readers might have noticed articles by the BBC, The Times and The Guardian on the subject of organists' improvisations. Journalists were surprised to discover that behind many a charming interlude were all too familiar themes. However, this won't be news to anyone who knows the average organist!
Try listening to improvisations and see if you can pick out familiar themes, perhaps being played slower or with different rhythm. Your web editor knows of cathedral evensongs being introduced by Coronation Street and Eastenders (simultaneously), preludes on the X-Files, postludes on Sesame Street and a toccata on "We're all going on a summer holiday". For more confessions, visit the message boards on Ship of Fools, the tongue-in-cheek Christian web site where it all started.

The Hautboy is playable on both manuals and pedal by transmission, and the 8' Pedal Octave is a transmission from the Great. All other stops are 56 note independent ranks, with the exception of the Tenor C Voix Celeste.
