Reflecting on Jacob's dream, this creates at least an eerie atmosphere, and perhaps a sense of awe. This is achieved with an ostinato 'Surely the Lord is in this place' and recitative-like interjections by a soprano solo, along with unexpected harmonic progressions and sudden dynamic contrasts. It requires a choir of considerable skill, and preferably a cathedral acoustic.
