This toccata begins with a fanfare and quickly settles into a challenging format, with double pedaling where the top part is the hymn tune. A more contemplative middle section expands the theme and its accompanying motifs before a return to the opening toccata style and a vibrant climax. This is a demanding but very rewarding work that well deserves to be added to the repertoire of the recitalist at FRCO standard and beyond. Beware – you'll need a 32 note pedal board, lots of big reeds and an expansive technique – but it will be worth it!
