John Rutter: To Every Thing there is a Season; Lord, Thou hast been our Refuge

John Rutter: To Every Thing there is a Season (SATB and piano), Lord, Thou hast been our Refuge (SATB, solo trumpet and organ). Instrumental parts also available for hire. OUP

John Rutter's reputation for writing fine melodies is all the more enhanced when orchestral parts are utilised to create colour. The first of this selection, scored for SATB and piano (but with orchestral parts available), is most effective in its simplicity. The second, though, does rely on the trumpet part to create the tension and excitement of the text from Psalm 90. A variety of musical sections utilise a range of keys and moods. The piece was first performed at the United Guilds' Service in St Paul's Cathedral in March of this year.
