Joel Martinson: Bright Beams. OUP
£9.95
Joel Martinson is one of the younger generation of American organists. His virtuosity shows through in this 'fantasy' piece, based initially on a semiquaver motif that gives way to a chordal second theme. The dissonant style is reminiscent of William Mathias in many places. Episodic in nature, the composition provides many different atmospheres in its nine-and-a-half minutes. As the publicity states, this is not music for the faint-hearted, but the FRCO-standard player will find much in this work to commend it in a recital repertoire.
