Franz Liszt: Funérailles

Franz Liszt: Funérailles; transcribed for organ by Lionel Rogg. Editions Henry Lemoine; available through United Music Publishers

£9.10

Originally written for piano, Funérailles forms part of Harmonies poétiques et religieuse, a collection of ten pieces written between 1842 and 1852. This is a predictably well-executed transcription by Lionel Rogg who takes as his inspiration Liszt's own versions for the two instruments of works such as Prelude and Fugue on BACH and Variations on Weinen, Klagen. Not without its debt to these obvious models, but probably also to Reubke, whose dark textures undoubtedly colour Rogg's suggested registrations. Passages of difficulty in this substantial piece suggest that a level of at least grade 8 is appropriate.
