Bengt Hambraeus: Organ Works 1977-2000

This substantial volume of 11 organ works features facsimiles of the composer's manuscripts & very thorough & detailed notes about each piece & the organs for which they were written (including St. Paul's Cathedral, London & St. Jacobi, Hamburg). Hambraeus's musical language is wide-ranging; looking back towards the neoclassicism of Hindemith, etc., & encompassing current European styles of composers like Norgard, Part, etc. The most pleasing & approachable works are the "Variations sur un theme de Gilles Vigneault" & the "Missa pro Organo - in memoriam Olivier Messiaen"; the other pieces are uncompromising in their demands upon players & listeners.
