Diana Burrell: North Star for trumpet and organ. United Music Publishers
£7.80
First performed on 21 February 2002 in St John's Smith Square by Deborah Calland (trumpet) and Paul Dean (organ), North Star opens with a bold trumpet solo of angular melody and rhythm. The organ enters with a barely audible discord over which the trumpet continues its discourse. The dialogue between the two instruments becomes more equal after a brief organ toccata passage, although an undulating organ passage with shards of light dominates for a few pages until the trumpet joins in again with a very fast moving figure which rises two octaves in one phrase. Undoubtedly a difficult piece to perform or to hear, it is certainly a showpiece which trumpet and organ duos should investigate.
