This originated as a BBC programme but has rightly reached DVD. Andrew Davis is a committed Elgarian and understands not only the history of the work but the music itself, bringing insight and a touching romanticism to his interpretation. We are shown the photos of the various Friends portrayed within and, in a separate programme, the background to Elgar’s relationship to each of them. Thankfully the music is kept separate from the explanations so one can simply listen either before or after taking in the background.
