Historical Encores and Transcriptions, Volume 1
Recorded between 1925 and 1928
NAXOS 8.110972
In my review in Issue No.327 of Roger Fisher’s CD form Hull City Hall (which you can read here) I referred to a recording of the Adagio from Bach’s Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C made by Pablo Casals, cello, in 1927. I compared it – favourably – with Roger Fisher’s performance on the organ, which proved to be almost identical, and recommended that Casals’ 78 shellac disc should be transferred to CD. Admirably, Naxos has reproduced the recording on their budget label, priced at £4.99. It contains a further eighteen items from Casals’ repertoire and I think that every organist should buy this CD, if only to hear the sheer perfection displayed by Casals. You cannot fail to enjoy this CD!
