J. P. SWEELINCK: KEYBOARD MUSIC

Gunther Fetz, organ, harpsichord and virginal
EDITION CLARINO EC 99
74'19"

A pleasing anthology of preludes, toccatas, pavanes and variations is heard on this CD. Fetz is equally at home on the organ and harpsichord and his performances are clearly and deliberately phrased and taken at fairly measured tempi. All three instruments on this CD are 20th-century and the harpsichord and virginal have mean-tone temperament. The organ is rather more modern-sounding, but gives a good account of itself. Sadly no information is given about it in the CD booklet, but there's plenty written about the composer and the music. The CD ends with Fetz's rather Dupre-ish improvisation on the theme to "Mein junges Leben hat ein End" - an interesting conclusion if one doesn't mind the abrupt shift in musical idiom.
