Like Mendelssohn and Rheinberger, August Gottfried Ritter combined baroque elements with contemporary romanticism via the poise and charm of the late 18th century classical school. His music has a strong character all of its own and shouldn't be dismissed as a pale shadow of other 19th century German composers.
Lohmann's superb playing and informative booklet notes make the best possible advocacy for Ritter, and the choice of the Walcker organ was an inspired one. It's set in a warm acoustic and has a variety of 8' stops and a ringing tutti includes mixtures with 3rds. For those who like Mendelssohn and Rheinberger this CD is well worth sampling.
