The term "stylus phantasticus" refers not to the sometimes incredibly complex outpourings of a Liszt, Reger or Sorabji, but rather a North German musicological term for a music style developed in the late 17th and early 18th centuries by composers such as Bruhns, Lbeck, Buxtehude, Bhm and Scheidermann.

The Church of St Marien, Osnabrck was bombed in World War II, and the old North German organ of the Schnitger tradition was destroyed. This was replaced in 1967 by D.A.Flentrop, who made a magnificent 4-manual and pedal organ of 47 speaking stops resembling in sound the North German baroque style.

Volker Ellenberg, currently organist of St Johanis in Mainz, has concentrated on this Early Music style and his exemplary performance will ensure that the listener will appreciate his skills. DRC
